A yellow gold mechanical watch expressing "Sakura-wakaba," newly budding leaves on a cherry tree

The 62GS debuted Grand Seiko’s first automatic movement. This new creation uses a modern interpretation of the 62GS case design along with a dial that conveys a unique moment in the seasonal landscape of Japan. In a first for a 62GS model that is not a limited edition, 18k yellow gold has been used to craft the case. The dial’s light-green color evokes the budding leaves that follow the cherry blossoms at the end of spring, which glimmer in the light as they reflect morning sun. With its soft comfort and easy wearability, the leather strap harmonizes with the dial’s subtle color to impart an elegant impression. Created by the skilled craftspeople of the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, the Hi-Beat Caliber 9S85 achieves its stable precision thanks to its high frequency of 36,000 vph.

A case design that modernizes the 62GS, a milestone in Grand Seiko’s history

Grand Seiko’s first automatic watch, the 62GS, was introduced in 1967. Its most distinctive feature is almost certainly its bezel-less structure, in which the glass is directly fixed to the case body. This design reduces the visual thickness of the watch while allowing light to enter the dial from multiple angles. This model inherits the bezel-less structure and other design elements of the original 62GS from 1967, while refining aspects such as wearability and crown operability to achieve a more contemporary design.

Expressing the morning sunlight reflected by budding leaves

The dial’s elegant pattern evokes “Sakura-wakaba,’ the budding green leaves that appear amongst the falling cherry blossoms as spring begins to pass into summer. The appearance of the dial changes according to the angle and amount of light, enhancing the moment when one glances at the watch. The light-green pattern is imbued with a subtle yellow hue, which harmonizes perfectly with the 18-karat yellow gold case to further emphasize an ephemeral moment in nature.

Caliber 9S85

This high-frequency mechanical movement was developed by rethinking the parts that form the foundation of the watch’s precision, granting the level of torque necessary to maintain a high oscillation rate and realizing a practical power reserve of about 55 hours when fully wound.
